Why Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatrics refers to the branch of medicine dealing with obesity, its causes, and methods for prevention and treatment.   Obesity is a serious problem in American society with 65% of the population now regarded as overweight and 30% of the population in the obese range.

Every year millions of people turn to diet, fitness and medication to treat their obesity. However, the National Institutes of Health report that 90% of the people who participate in diets and weight-loss programs do not lose significant and sustained weight.

Studies demonstrate that weight-loss surgery, as compared to non-surgical treatments, yields the longest period of sustained weight loss in patients who have failed other therapies.

How to we Measure Obesity?

We use a measure called Body Mass Index to evaluate if a person is overweight or not. Body Mass Index is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI is a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people even though it does not directly measure body fat.

  • An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
  • An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

Overweight and obese people  have a greater risk of developing many diseases and health conditions than people who maintain a healthy weight.

Some of the conditions that obese people ar most at risk for developing are:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
