Adjustable Gastric BandingGastric banding is the process of placing an adjustable band around the top of the stomach to reduce the amount of food that can pass into the stomach at any one time. The most popular form of Gastric Banding in the United States is the LAP-BAND System which is manufactured by Allergan. Since the FDA approved this device in 2001, about 150,000 people have undergone the procedure as a treatment for morbid obesity. The LAP-BAND System is the least invasive and only adjustable surgical treatment for morbid obesity in the United States. Weight loss results because the LAP-BAND reduces size of the stomach pouch and limits the amount of food that can be eaten. Patients report that they feel the sensation of fullness earlier and are more satisfied with smaller amounts of food.
The LAP-BAND Procedure
After the surgical procedure, the LAP-BAND is adjusted to control the rate of weight loss based on the individual needs of the patient. The band is inflated or deflated by adding or removing fluid to it as part of a simple outpatient visit. Periodically adjusting the band allows the rate of weight loss to be controlled as the patient's lifestyle and health improve. Because no permanent changes are made to the body during LAP-BAND insertion, if necessary the entire procedure can be reversed by removing the LAP-BAND system from the patient. |
