Why It is Important to Lose Weight Before Lap Band Surgery

The idea of losing weight before undergoing Lap band surgery may seem bizarre to some. After all, you are having the procedure because you have struggled for years with an inability to lose weight. Being asked to lose weight before having weight loss surgery may just seem cruel. However, for the surgery to have the greatest chance of success it is important that you embark on a pre-surgery diet a few weeks before the procedure.

Losing weight before the surgery will reduce the amount of fat around your liver. It will also help shrink the liver itself. The surgery can’t be performed if the liver is too large. Losing weight prepares the body for surgery and lessens the risk of complications.

Beginning a healthy eating plan prior to surgery also prepares you physically, mentally and emotionally for the lifestyle changes you will need to make following surgery. You will be required to eat in a new way after surgery. Starting a diet beforehand takes some of the shock out of it and will make your new way of eating easier to stick with. You can experiment in the weeks prior to surgery with different healthy foods to see what you like and detest. Stock your kitchen with the foods you enjoy prior to surgery so you have choices available right away.

A diet that is low in calories, fat, cholesterol and carbohydrates if often recommended for gastric band in St. Petersburg. Some surgeons suggest a liquid or prepackaged diet to help take the guesswork out of the plan and offer the quickest results. Lap band seminars in St. Petersburg are held often as well. Contact your clinic for more information on sessions that will be convenient for you.

I had my surgery 2 yrs. ago. I lost weight in the months before the surgery because I felt that I was having the lap band soon and for the first time would be able to keep it off. This proved to be true. I have lost a total of 95 lbs. and while I still have 30 lbs. left to reach my goal, I feel better than I have in years.
