Why Is Weight Loss Important?
For many people, losing weight is about looking better in a swimsuit or fitting into a smaller pair of jeans. However, there are many important reasons to lose weight that have nothing to do with how you look on the beach. Sometimes we forget that weight loss isn’t all about looking better. Sometimes it isn’t even about us. Sometimes weight loss is about the people that we love and who love us. Being here for them for as long as we can is one of the fundamental reasons for getting back into shape and being healthy.
Being overweight or obese puts you at risk for serious health complications, and losing those excess pounds can alleviate or prevent numerous health problems.
- Obesity-related health complications include: heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, some types of cancers, sleep apnea, elevated blood cholesterol levels, and acid reflux disease
You could reasonably argue that losing weight could actually help you live longer. People who lose weight also note that they find themselves in a better mood, have a higher self-esteem, are more motivated, and generally just feel healthier.
While your doctor can give you a long list of reasons to lose weight, the desire to change your lifestyle must be a personal decision. Losing weight involves making dramatic changes to how you view and choose the foods you eat. It also requires you to find a way to fit physical activity into your day-to-day life. It’s a big commitment, but one that offers substantial rewards in how you look and feel.
