Focus on Flexibility | Bradenton Surgical Group
Many people focus on cardio and strength-training exercises in order to lose weight and build muscle. But a well rounded fitness program should also include regular stretching. Why should you stretch?
Four Benefits of Stretching
- Stretching increases flexibility. The benefit of flexible muscles extends beyond the ability to touch your toes at will. Being more flexible can make day-to-day tasks easier, including bending over to tie your shoes or lifting heavy packages.
- Stretching improves range of motion of your joints. Your range of motion affects your balance. Having good balance makes you less prone to falls and injuries. Balance becomes especially important as you age and the damage from simple falls can be more severe.
- Stretching improves circulation. The blood flow to your muscles is increased when you stretch. If you’re putting your body through strength training, improved circulation is important to prevent and recover from muscle injuries.
- Stretching can relieve stress. For many people, tense muscles are a common byproduct of stress. While stretching can’t eliminate the stressors from your life, it does relax the tension in your muscles, which can make you feel less stressed.
Stretching alone may not help you lose weight, but it will help prepare your body for the aerobic and strength-training exercises that do take off the pounds.
