Exercising Before and After Hernia Repair
Hernia repair as with any type of surgery is taxing to the body. Care must be taken prior to the surgery as well as after the hernia surgery to make sure no activity is taken on that may cause the hernia to worsen or delay healing.
Prior to hernia surgery, when the hernia is found there is no reason to discontinue exercise. It is highly recommended that a doctor be consulted before engaging in any activity to be assured that the activity is safe for the type of hernia the patient has. In most cases, aerobics which exercises the larger and longer muscles of the body is safe. It might also be safe to participate in water aerobics and swimming.
When participating in any type of exercise, the size of the hernia should be monitored and if any activity causes it to worsen, the activity should be stopped immediately.
Following hernia repair, it will take about one month before safe activity or exercise can resume. While it may delay you in getting out to the parks and water around Bradenton, taking caution in resuming activity will only allow you to enjoy it more when you can participate.
Once the patient has been cleared by their surgeon to resume activities and take part in exercise there are several activities that will allow anyone to slowly work themselves back into the swing of things. Walking is an old standby and will not place any undue stress on any healing tissues or musculature. While you can do this activity at a school or gym, Bradenton offers plenty of places in the great outdoors with breath taking scenery to enjoy.
Other exercises that can be worked in once four to five weeks of healing has taken place and a surgeon has given their approval include sit-ups to continue strengthening abdominal muscles and arm curls. Low repetition and low weight is recommended at first and this exercise should not cause pain.
