Cooking Without Salt | Bradenton Surgical Group
One great way to avoid extra salt in your diet is to stop eating take out food–but what about cooking at home? The good news is that there are plenty of ways to cook without salt, and you can still get plenty of flavor. Getting used to cooking this way can take a little bit of time and effort, but it is well worth it. One of the best ways to reduce sodium is to eat fresh foods. This means things such as fruits and vegetables. Pick up a piece of fruit for a snack or add raw veggies to a bed of lettuce for a salad. Instead of dressing, try squeezing a little bit of lemon or lime juice on top.
Don’t automatically add salt to foods as a way of flavoring. Instead, try using fresh herbs instead of reaching for the salt shaker. Keep a little herb garden or window box and grow things such as parsley, oregano and chives from seed–or pick them up at a farmers market. If you don’t have the room (or you don’t have a green thumb), try some dried herbs instead. Cooking without salt isn’t all that difficult, and it can be a lot of fun to experiment around with different tastes and flavors. You may even discover you like some things you enjoy that you weren’t aware of before.
