Hemorrhoid SurgeryHemorrhoids are blood vessels in and around the anus and lower rectum that have become swollen or inflamed. They are similar to varicose veins in the legs. Hemorrhoids are quite common and by age 50 about half of us have them. They are also quite common in pregnant woman because of the increased abdominal pressure as the baby grows and the strain of giving birth. . The most common cause of Hemorrhoids is straining during bowel movements. Other causes are aging, obesity, sitting too long on the toilet, chronic constipation or diarrhea. Hemorrhoids can form inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external). HemorrhoidectomyAlthough most hemorrhoids do not require surgical treatment, those that do not respond to other therapies may need to be surgically removed. This procedure is called a hemorrhoidectomy. Dr. Bunch and Dr. Erbella normally perform hemorrhoidectomy as an outpatient procedure. This means that you will only need to spend a few hours in the hospital. Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH)This relatively new minimally invasive procedure has several advantages over hemorrhoidectomy and is used whenever possible by the Bradenton Surgical Group surgeons. By applying a specially designed circular stapler device, the surgeon can reposition the hemorrhoidal tissue back to its original position inside the anus. The process reduces blood flow to the internal hemorrhoids causing them to shrink over a period of four to six weeks. The major advantage of this procedure is that stapling and trimming of the tissue occurs in an area of the rectum where no pain fibers are present. This results in less discomfort and a return to normal activity within a shorter period of time. What to expect from your hemorrhoid surgery
