Breast Sparing Surgery

Any surgery that removes a cancerous tumor while leaving the breast  essentially intact is called a Breast Sparing Surgery.

Bradenton Surgical Group specializes in breast-conserving surgeries for eligible women in the early stages of cancer. Studies have shown that breast-conserving surgeries combined with radiation therapy are just as effective as mastectomy in the early stages of breast cancer.

Other terms you may hear for breast-sparing surgery include lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery, or segmental mastectomy.

Lumpectomy

During a lumpectomy the surgeon removes the tumor and some of the healthy tissue surrounding it.  This is the most common breast cancer surgery performed today and has excellent results when combined with radiation therapy. The removed tissue is carefully examined to ensure that the entire tumor is removed.  If cancer cells are found close to the edges (margins) of the lumpectomy, your surgeon will perform a re-excision to remove the remaining cancer.
