Breast CenterA host of new technologies are now available in the treatment of breast disease. At the Bradenton Surgical Group we treat both benign and cancerous diseases of the breast. Today, many women come to the office with breast lumps. Thanks to modern technology such as ultrasound, mammography and minimally invasive biopsy procedures we are often able to make the diagnosis within days. For those with abnormal mammograms, but without a palpable lump, we can often obtain the diagnosis without open surgical procedures by using a stereotactic biopsy machine. This device, allows the surgeon to use a mammogram machine to find the abnormality in the breast and biopsy it, without a large surgical incision. For those with cancer of the breast, we offer the latest techniques in conservative breast surgery & sentinel lymph node biopsy. This surgery allows treatment of the cancer without losing the entire breast through a mastectomy. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a new diagnostic procedure used to determine whether breast cancer has spread (metastasized) to the rest of the body via the axillary lymph nodes (i.e., lymph glands under the arm). A sentinel lymph node biopsy requires the removal of only one to three lymph nodes for close review by a pathologist. If the sentinel nodes do not contain cancer cells, this may eliminate the need to remove additional lymph nodes in the axillary area. This means less pain and fewer complications than standard axillary dissection, such as lymphedema (chronic swelling) of the arm. Our team consists of a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon as well as your primary care physician. |
